Let us tell you a little about our Blaze. He is a very confident and spunky little guy. He will push his limits to see what he can get away with and then once corrected, he will look at you with those sad eyes and let out a little wimper/whine almost like a five year old saying, “but mom, I was just….!”. He does better with chain link fences than privacy fences. If he can’t see what’s on the other side, he will find an escape route just to ease that curiosity. So, be prepared to puppy proof the fence from time to time. Since being in his foster home, he has come a long way. Where he once use to attack and try to dominate every dog he came in contact with, he now plays and has become almost submissive with other dogs. His foster mom credits her dogs for teaching him this. She had nothing to do with it. He has nothing against cats and as long as they will play with him, he can play gently. We are working on the potty training and think once he is settled into his forever home, he will stick to your routine as long as you do. He is contagious, energetic, loves to snuggle, will keep you laughing with his antics, but this incredibly humorous personality comes with a price. See, Blaze does not trust just anyone. He needs time to warm up to new people and he requires someone who will reprimand him when he steps over the line. He needs structure or he will walk all over you. Because of all of this, we can’t say that Blaze would be a good fit for just any home. In fact, I would not recommend him going into a home that may have children. Any potential adopter should realize that with this particular dog, it may take weeks before he even lets you hold him. We aren’t trying to scare people off, it is just the truth. But we can’t stress enough how worth the wait this little guy is. As his foster mom, I can definitely say that if you don’t fall in love with Blaze right away, he has a way of growing on you after time and even though he can be a hand full, you just can’t help but eventually fall in love with him. He deserves the very best of everything in life. He needs an adopter that is looking for a challenge before they get this amazing reward of having such a cool, intelligent dog as their best friend and companion. Unfortunately, there are many rescue dogs in the same boat as Blaze. They show some aggression out of fear and end up at a shelter. If only we humans could take a step back and put ourselves in the position of the dogs. Imagine being this little helpless creature and this ‘thing’, this giant that is 10-15 times larger than your size hovering over you and trying to pick you up. I know I would be scared. We have to realize that what the dogs think count too. Yes, we will be their master and their owner, but we also should not expect these dogs to know this stuff right out of the gate. In fact, I would bet their previous owners thought that and this is why they are now in rescue. Anything worth having, takes time to accomplish. The same goes with training a dog and earning their trust. If you are that special person who can maintain the patience it takes for some of these small dogs, please contact us.
